The way to go when substituting wire of different sizes is to find a table with the resistance per foot of each AWG size of copper wire. Then you know where you are when you go to substitute with different sizes.
I am still learning about this stuff. but that believe the magnetic pull depends on the number of turns in the coil. The resistance depends on the number of feet of wire and the size of the wire. Then you have to consider how to fit a sufficient number of turns into the available space in the coil housing.
