I just got done installing two replacement diesel pullmore wheels on my New Haven 499. This are the new vulcanized replacement wheels that just came out. The rubber is molded onto the wheel like the original (rather than a grooved wheel with a rubber band). The wheels are made of steel and were manufactured by Neil Trump. I bought mine from Doug Peck and understand Joe Haenn may also sell them).
Anyway, the wheels are well made and run nice in operation. It solved my problem in which the original wheels became out of round and caused my locomotive to wobble. It now runs smooth & pulls much better. Installation - I removed the old wheels using a modified battery cable puller as described in Tom Barkers repair manual. The plastic insulating bushings from the old wheels are reused with the new wheels. I did have a problem pressing the wheels back on straight. My first try was to use a C-clamp to press them on. One wheel was was crooked and I had to remove it. For my second try, I used a drill press vise. The alignment is still not perfect, but is acceptable. If someone has a better method for pressing wheels on straight, I'd appreciate a post.
