In the real railroading world, a track torpedo is an audible signaling device placed on the track that when run over but a train wheel explodes and can be heard for miles. It was used in several instances some for warnings for a following train and others to tell the engineer where the rear of the train was when backing for protection of a crossing etc.. They could be used in multiples to mean different things. The device was a 1-1/2" square x 3/8" block of percussion explosive that was attached to the track with a lead strap.
