Some years ago, I bought a Fairmont Railways motor car from the SP
Sacramento Shops auction. It was one of those amazing finds, a BO motorcar
that didn't really have anything wrong with it! Fresh gas, charged the
battery, cleaned the carb, and away we went! Well, after the first couple of
trips (sanctioned, with an organized group) I decided to clean out stuff
inside and make certain everything was OK. Alright, smoking wiring on the
last trip actually made the decision for me!
Well, I opened the small tool box under the "hood" and found a pile of
torpedoes, some of them with crystalline stuff "oozing" out. Even I know
that around explosives, "oozing" stuff is NOT good! so I removed them, one
at a time, and put them in a larger, open box. On the way home, I stopped at
the fire station to find out what to do with them. The firemen walked over,
back away quickly and then donned those "environmental suits." "Sir, you'd
better stay over here, away from the vehicle." This didn't make me feel any
better, I had been sitting almost on top of that box riding some very rough
trackage the week before!
They called the bomb squad, who took an hour to show up. Well, those
guys get out of their truck, look in the back of mine, "Hmm, Railroad
Torpedoes. Well, we've got some other stuff to blow up, so we'll take them
now." The guy unceremoniously opens the truck , dumps the torpedoes into a
back and chucks them in the back of his truck, and they leave! So much for
environmental suits! The fireman in the suit just looks at the transaction,
looks at me and shrugs, and I headed home.
