Dear Jim,
All the sound modules that SHS markets with their F units operates
on both AC or DC. DCC and the Dallee LocoMatic Sound System do not care
if the current is AC or DC. But, with the Dallee when using DC, you
need to turn off the ability to operate without the 10 button
controller. You need to operate in what we call "Full LocoMatic" and
for that, the 10 button controller must be in the circuit. In
"traditional mode", you can operate with out the 10 button controller
and use the OTT/AM or Lionel 2 button controller to operate the horn or
bell. As these output DC over the track current to trigger the horn or
bell, if you are using DC for track current, the horn or bell will
constantly ring, much like what you get when you use the AM/OTT or
Lionel AF sound units on DC. The difference is the 10 button controller
and the ability to operate in another mode.
Which is better? LocoMatic does not have the ability to address or
select individual locos like DCC. But, it is less costly and a little
easier to learn. The Soundtraxx sound units are polyphonic so that you
hear multiple sounds at the same time, LocoMatic does not have this
feature. You have a choice of 4 horns that are programmed into the chip
of the Soundtraxx sound unit. These CV's can be selected to match you F
unit more easily with railroads that had different horns than the
standard WABCO. The Soundtraxx sound unit has a selectable dynamic
brake sound, the LocoMatic sound unit has an automatic air release sound
when the air tanks are purged of moisture. Each has it pluses and
minuses, and we use both of them. As all of our electronics are "plug
and play", they are very easy to change from one system to another. I
guess the big thing is that we give our customers the choice of which
they want.
