KING MSWATI ARRESTS PRO-DEMOCRACY MPS

SSN STATEMENT: 25 July 2021

The past weekend was a weekend to remember in the history of the tiny
kingdom currently embroiled in unprecedented political repression.

Fresh from murdering over 70 unarmed citizens, the king’s police were
involved in a scandal when one of them shot and killed two innocent young
people who were critical of the country’ leadership. This shocking crime
was followed by rallies and marches in the small town of Lomahasha, which
is next to the border with Mozambique. The police put these marches down
brutally by entering into people’s houses and shooting them with live and
rubber bullets.

The climax of the bloody weekend was when the police arrested the three
vocal Members of Parliament who have all along been publicly advocating for
political reforms. The three members of parliament are Bacede Mabuza,
Mduduzi Simelane and Mthandeni Dube. They have been charged under the
draconian Suppression of Terrorism Act (STA) and are currently held at the
Mbabane Police Station pending their appearance in court.

News of the three arrests has spread fast in the kingdom and incited a
second wave of protests. We wish to reiterate our call to all South
Africans and the world at large to support the oppressed Swazis by putting
pressure on the king to yield to the will of the people and embrace
dialogue.
