The Hindu January 21, 2005 : 2125 Hrs Nuclear confidence-building measure a must: Prof. Hoodbhoy
Mumbai, Jan. 21 (PTI): Pakistan and India should take the initiative and agree to cut off building the deadly nuclear fissile material as part of the ongoing multi-pronged confidence-building measures, according to eminent Pakistani nuclear physicist and UNESCO' Kalinga award winner Prof. Parvez A Hoodbhoy. "Why not both the countries, which are building highly enriched uranium and weapon grade plutonium, which are not necessary at this stage when confidence-building measures are on, together take an initiative to cut off building the fissile material?" Hoodbhoy said after screening a film on "A story of people at war across borders and boundaries-- Kashmir, Pakistan, India", at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) here today. Hoodbhoy is on a four-week tour on science popularisation on the invitation of the Government of India and would visit various cities including Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. Although the Fissile Material Cut off Treaty (FMCT) is itself in shambles, "it is high time both India and Pakistan should show the world how they could play an important role in building-confidence between the two nations and could become a role model," he said while interacting with scientists. The film was shown under the ageis of TIFR Film Club `Images'-- the first film club of the city started in 1970. There was a talk on reducing the fissile material in 2000 but "since the existing stock cannot be verified, at least the future building could be cut off," he added. _________________________________ SOUTH ASIANS AGAINST NUKES (SAAN): An informal information platform for activists and scholars concerned about Nuclearisation in South Asia South Asians Against Nukes Mailing List: archives are available @ two locations May 1998 - March 2002: <groups.yahoo.com/group/sap/messages/1> Feb. 2001 - to date: <groups.yahoo.com/group/SAAN_/messages/1> To subscribe send a blank message to: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> South Asians Against Nukes Website: www.s-asians-against-nukes.org ------------------------ Yahoo!
