Für seine Performance mit dem Titel " / ", konzipiert für die Kunsthalle Wien, präsentiert Julien Bismuth eine Arbeit,
welche an vorangegangene Projekte anschließt, insbesondere an die Performance L comme litote, welche im Dezember 2008
im Institut dArt Contemporain in Lyon gezeigt wurde. Bei " / " handelt es sich um eine Serie von unterbrochenen Gesten.
Die vier teilnehmenden Personen (der Künstler und drei SchauspielerInnen) interagieren innerhalb eine Serie von verketteten
Aktionen, welche mit einem Monolog, vorgetragen von einer Schauspielerin interagieren. Dieser Monolog wird insgesamt
drei mal wiederholt. Unterschiedliche Variationen ergeben sich durch verschiedene Schnitte und Montagen eines ursprünglichen
Textes,aber auch der unterschiedlichen Artikulation der Vortragenden. Kurze Handlungssequenzen werden von diesen frag-
mentierten Monologen abgelöst. Der Künstler selbst ist Teil der Handlung, allerdings mehr als ein Objekt oder ein Gegenstand als
ein Schauspieler, welches von 2 Schauspielern in unterschiedliche Postionen gebracht wird. Die Handlungen und der Text
drehen sich um eine Figur, nämlich die des Künstlers und im Fall des Monologs um die eines unbekannten Protagonisten. Dazu
werden Zeichnungen von Bismuth präsentiert Skizzen von Objekten und Handlungen, die er über die Jahre angesammelt hat,
die wie ein Archiv seiner Arbeit funktionieren, die aber auch eine Entwicklung und den Ursprung seiner Arbeit zeigen.
Julien Bismuth (geb. Paris 1973) lebt und arbeitet in New York. Ausstellungen und Performances im Orange County Museum of Art
(Kalifornien), Villa Arson (Nizza), Musée de Jeu de Paume (Paris), David Zwirner Gallery (New York), Galerie Parisa Kind (Frankfurt)
und Layr Wuestenhagen Contemporary (Wien). Kommende Projekte sind eine Performance in der Tate Modern (London) im Februar 09
(mit Jean Pascal Flavien) und eine Einzelausstellung in der Galerie Vallois in Paris.
Die Perfromance L comme litote in der Kunsthalle Wien wird realisiert in Kooperation mit der Sammlung Lenkius Wien.

For his performance, titled " / ", Julien Bismuth is presenting a piece that follows from his recent projects, including
the performance L comme litote, shown at the Institut dArt Contemporain in Lyon in December 2008. " / " is structured around
a series of interrupted gestures. The four participants (the artist and three actors) interact through a sequence of actions,
punctuated by a monologue, repeated three times, with variations produced by changes in the text, and its articulation.
The artist participates in the action, but less as an actor than as an object: the repeatedly collapsed and collapsing object of both
the speech and actions of the performers. Both the actions and the text are constructed around a single figure, that of the artist
for the actions, and that of an unnamed protagonist for the monologue. In addition, a series of drawings by Bismuth will also
be presented: sketches of objects, props, and actions that he has accumulated over the years, in what has become both an archive
of the work and of its evolution, as well as the wellspring from which his work continues to be generated.
Julien Bismuth (1973) was born in Paris and lives and works in New York. His work and performances have been presented in
several venues, including the Orange County Museum of Art (California), the Villa Arson (Nice), the Musée de Jeu de Paume (Paris),
David Zwirner Gallery (New York), Galerie Parisa Kind (Frankfurt) and Layr Wuestenhagen Contemporary (Vienna). Upcoming
projects include a performance with Jean Pascal Flavien at the Tate Modern (London) in February 09 and a solo exhibtion at the
Galerie Georges-Philippe et Nathalie Vallois in Paris.
