ArToll - artists laboratory "the ideal man '

- Invitation --

The ideal man

It sits on the couch and ‘zaps’.
I love him. He also.
He has an appearance both the outside and inside.
He holds the world in position and leads the other people in the development
steps.
He is there when the ideal woman who doesn’t search for him any more.

He thinks like a man, feels like a woman.

Background
In 2007 I started out to fulfil a personal need to sign my ideal man. I did
this every day and with my eyes closed. Signing with the eyes closed, I lost
control and the distorted portraits of men that emerged had something touching
about them.
For me it was not the ideal image, as one sees in a magazine, but rather what I
needed that day: a strong arm of a man around me, a listening man or maybe a
man who contradicts me.
After several months the drawings began their own lives. There arose larger
drawings because I wanted to make men bigger, I wanted to give them more body,
to make them more present. The drawings alone were no longer sufficient so I
began to paint and photograph.

>From this daily process emerged a collection of work that lead to an
>exhibition. Together with a fellow artist, we had the idea to examine the men
>present at the exhibition on the possible ideal characteristics, height and
>weight, a piece of her and their ideal body part. In this way men were
>actually involved. I discovered that these men had not always thought much
>about themselves.
In 2008 I spent a residency in Omaha, Nebraska, USA and I have continued this
practice with other local artists as a team of men questioned about their
characteristics. This resulted in a sound band. Eventually I found my own
perspectives too limited, and I wanted to go from a broader perspective on the
various aspects of the ideal man.

And the wife? Although the woman, and the emancipation of women currently
receives much attention in the media (more women in important social and
political positions), I need the man himself to move to centre stage, because I
find that this shift of the position of the woman leaves behind the man
sometimes misunderstood. What must he be with these emancipated women? What
role can he have when the woman can do everything herself?
I wish to give the man a chance again to look at himself, his position in
society and in social life. The ideal man - not only from the female
perspective, but also from the standpoint of the man.

The ideal man: with what kind of men would society become more ideal today?
Ideal as a man alone - friend, philosopher, writer, worker, boss, father, lover
or partner. Ideal for at the moment, ideal as utopia, or just the ideal of the
experience which it is today and start the idea from there.

In 2009, I broadened my study by sharing my ideas about the ideal man with four
other artists in the Poptahof, an empty house in Delft. We lived one month
together, worked and discussed much about the theme of the ideal man. Alongside
the developed works was the research, the central laboratory situation - a
focus of the stay. The kitchen was the central laboratory in Delft - a central
place in the house where the many discussions took place. It was a special
experience for everyone with beautiful and interesting works resulting from it.

This was for me, one reason more to share the theme "the ideal man" in all
possible situations with more artists.
.
Concept for ArToll, January 2011 ‘the ideal man’

ArToll is a place where research, laboratory function and the experiment is
central. The interior of the building is arranged in such a way that you can
easily exchange thoughts with one another and/or work together.

This laboratory function fits well with my project. I would like to invite
12-16 artists (men and women) to deepen the theme "the ideal man" further and
translate into their own new work.
I want to create a central place where we can discuss ‘the ideal man’.

It is also my goal to invite speakers from science, the museum world and the
artist's practice to highlight the various viewpoints surrounding this issue on
a theoretical basis. The participating artists can be inspired by these
contributions and broaden their perspective on the theme.

Does culture affect the image of the ideal man? Are there any agreements or
even differences in the perception of the ideal man? Therefore it seems
interesting to invite artists from different cultures, such as Turkey, South
Europe, America, and possibly, India, Africa or Asia.

Reporting
During the discussions key words / phrases are written and fixed on the wall in
the central location. I also want to capture the talks through video and
possibly create a weblog, so both the participating artists can always get back
what has been discussed and the visiting people may be able to share what has
happened in the weeks in ArToll.
The capturing and reporting can also serve later as input for the next
experiment.
During the study period the works will emerge.

Presentation
After the work period there follows a presentation of the results to the
public. During the presentation, the audience can take a glimpse into the
laboratory and the work made and perhaps they themselves will be subject of
investigation.
A few days before the final presentation we invite the press for a preview, so
that in time their readers / listeners will be informed.
If possible we would like to make a catalogue.
It is possible to organize lectures for the participating artists to the public
or students during the presentation days.

Planning
Start Monday, January 10th, 2011 (with the possibility of even starting January
3rd)
VIP presentation (for press and VIPs) January 25th
Open 27 till January 30.

Housing
ArToll has 7 bedrooms with 18 beds, one mens and one womens shower, a shared
kitchen and dining area. As to the work areas, the building is two storeys high
with several large white open spaces with many windows.
There is no equipment or tools available, but there are tables, chairs and
ladders. The artists are expected to bring their own materials and tools.

The organization requires no rent. Transportation, material costs for food and
drink are for the artist to pay. We hope to obtain sponsorship for food and for
a catalogue.

More information and photos on ArToll can be found on the website. www.artoll.de

Motivation
The ideal man of today. Who is he? What is he doing? What does he look like?
How does he behave? The sexy lover, the dear father, the industrious worker,
the attentive colleague, the involved boss, a good friend...........

The sweet, tough, thoughtful, smart, charming, wealthy, sporty, rich, soft,
strong, reliable, rugged, empathic, romantic, muscular man....

The ideal man is evolving. From an ape-like caveman to medieval knight, a dandy
man, an almost bold man with three long hears combed to the side on the
lawnmower, through to the inward-looking uncertain man who, dressed in
dungarees, agrees to the new non-fucking lifestyle........., through the
metroman with epilated eyebrows, to the recent übersexual and Howler. The
current society has a shortage of ideal men. The utopian idea of the ideal man
is gone ...

What does appeal to you in the theme "the ideal man'? Write a short motivation
why you would want to join this project.

Selection of artists
In the selection of the artists we seek in addition to the quality of the work,
a diversity in media and a balanced ratio between male and female artists from
different countries / cultures.

Conditions to participate
You can attend ArToll from 10 till January 26th, 2011.
An active cooperation of the participating artists is expected.

You can express yourself in English. Since the project is international, the
spoken language will be English.

After our selection you are requested to pay 100 euros. This amount is a
deposit and a guarantee that your reserved place remains. At the end of your
stay you will get this amount back. Refund of this amount is not possible if
you renounce from participation in the project.

Procedure
