As usual, it turned out to be a silly little thing: https://github.com/sagemath/sagecell/commit/94ded5b67c555046564c679b235b3afe83751ca0 PHP version in a path had to be bumped up when switching to a new Ubuntu release, so things got broken two months ago. Thanks for not giving up, David!
