What is the practical impact of the switch? What are the differences
between UCS2 and UCS4? This is "text encoding" as it occurs in files
used by Python, right?

One of my concerns with the Fontification Of Nearly Everything is
that, for example, 'less' becomes useless

Try this silly experiment on Mac OS X:
  - run System Profiler
  - "Save As" plain text (use the pop-up)
  - run 'less /path/to/just-saved/file' in a Terminal window.

Text? Plain?

Feh!
