Hmm. When I read this thread on Google groups (http:// groups.google.com/group/sage-devel/browse_frm/thread/ 888293270a5e4db6), it hides most of the previous message, with a link saying "Show quoted text" which I can click on to expand if I want to. This way the whole message is there if people need to see it, but it can easily be ignored otherwise.
