I agree. If a name isn't known, then an error has to result that
clearly says that, well, the name isn't known. Otherwise, debugging
wouldn't be fun any more.

I hope a convention like "any undefined symbol is a symbolic variable"
will not become standard. It would be a regression, IMHO.
