I've made a number of changes to the 'prereq' script which should cover all Fortran issues. Sorry these were not done in earlier updates to prereq, but the GNU fortran compiler does not handled the '-dumpversion' option properly. Anyway, it should be fixed now.

It would be good if this could be tested on a wide range of platforms, as there are specific issues on OS X and Solaris.
