There are good arguments to be made that the average of 2 colors should be defined such that a dither pattern of two colors is perceived as the same color as their average. Apparently, the RGB values of a picture are purposely not interpreted in a way that is perceived as "linear", and different choices are made for different pictures (the gamma value).
