I had exactly this problem when I tried Sagetex, and gave up (not
before installing a lot of things none of which helped).  That was on
a laptop running a quite old ubuntu (8.04) which did not want to be
upgraded.  I now have another machine with ubuntu 11.04 and will try
again one day.
