It appears that `sage -n` breaks when you run the command in a shell when 
the current directory is set to `$SAGE_ROOT/devel/sage`. I remember this 
happening as long ago as Sage 4.6.1, in fact. Can someone familiar with how 
Sage's startup scripts work please take a look at trac ticket #11914 ( 
http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/ticket/11914 )?
