hmm. I just tried this again on my desktop (OSX 10.8) with sage 5.8.  Here 
the patches fail to apply on a clean clone. for the psuedo-conway patch I 
get:

failed to synchronize metadata for "sage/rings/finite_rings/constructor.py"

If I forge on regardless with the other two, then I get the same metadata 
problem for: "sage/categories/pushout.py"

Of course, with the patches failing to apply, then it isn't fix. I'll have 
to check and see if the same thing happened on my Ubuntu machine where I 
tried it above.
