There is again this point cropping up in the comments:

"But Sage's mission is to be a viable alternative to Mathematica"

This is being discussed tangentially in another sage-devel thread, but I
think it's something to be considered carefully. There is a difference
between saying "it is ok for Sage to develop in a direction which makes it
a viable replacement for Matlab, Maple and Mathematica" and "Sage's mission
statement is to be a viable alternative to MMMs". I think it creates false
expectations and ultimately disillusion in potential users.

My impression as a lurker on the mailing list is that Sage is heavily
oriented towards the needs of the math research community and that not much
effort is being put into other areas of scientific computing that might be
of interest to physicists and engineers (which are heavy users of MMM). My
impression is that the Scipy-Numpy-Sympy ecosystem is a better fit than
Sage, at least for numerical purposes.

All of this is of course all fine and dandy, but I think it should be
stated more precisely (if that is really the case and not just my
impression :).

Cheers,

  Francesco.
