special interest group is SIGSAM   (symbolic and algebraic manipulation)

Over the years I think there was more concern over various
unpleasant meanings of "manipulation" especially when translated into
other languages.  Some people writing programs for symbolic math
probably thought they were very good at algebra, from high school.


Symbolic Mathematical Computation  seems to be a cleaner phrase.
Other people use Mathematical Knowledge   in various ways.
