I'm probably in the stone age, and possibly suffer from a catastrophe bias, but a few years ago, my Sage builds would often fail when I added "-j4". I don't remember whether doc-building was often the culprit or not. Anyway, I never consistently started to use it. I take it that everyone else does, so I should as well. >> 8 minutes from a clean build is not impressive IMHO, but perhaps it's >> then not the most important piece of the compilation process to improve. > > for 20,000 pages? Circa 40 pages per second isn't too bad (for TeX, say). Is the pdf compilation very important? Isn't everyone using the HTML one anyway? 40 HTML pages/second is not impressive. But as I said, probably it would help a lot if just the incremental building was more robust.
