You have commit history on the track server too. At some point you would have to go through that (since it is the way to get your code merged in sage), so you can either do it now, or work on a separate repo and at the end create the ticket and include the branch there.
Besides, the track ticket allows also a discussion there about it with the rest of the community. But it is up to you, if you feel more comfortable working on a separate repo, and only merging at the end of the project, it is also ok. About the blog, the most important is too keep the communication in it. That is, to post often about your project. Think of it as if it were a diary of the project.
