There is an optional meataxe package. If it is installed (with "make meataxe"), linear algebra over GF(p^n) with p^n<255 will be a lot faster than in vanilla Sage (though still slower than in Magma). Note that "sage -i meataxe" won't be enough, as there is an optional Cython wrapper for MeatAxe matrices in sage.matrix.matrix_gfpn_dense that needs to be built, too. So, "sage -b" needs to be done as well, and if I am not mistaken, "make meataxe" includes "sage -b".
