I don't really care if you call it a UI or API; this will be moot to the 
end user.  It is an interface that worked the same way for a long time and 
achieved de facto status.  Even if it didn't follow some POSIX thing ("The 
command line UI rules" of which you speak) the vast majority of Sage users 
will be unfamiliar with.  The goal of Sage is being a viable alternative to 
various programs, not infinite compliance with such things, though if we 
can move that way gently, it makes things easier for (some) developers.

Ivan, if you can test the Mac app with this rc, that would be nice, though 
I suspect also it might stay okay.
