I don't know the problem. An obvious thought: I guess you know
you have amd64 bit ubuntu installed as opposed to 32 bit?
This wasn't clear from your email.

Also, one website suggested that notebook has an
(intel) centrino chip, not the amd64 bit chip the binary I think
is built for. I could easily be wrong but maybe that is related
to your problem?

Can you try compiling from source?
