Not only that but the two compare as equal on 3.3; I just glanced at  
the code, w/o really seeing what it was doing.

A quick check of past versions:

2.9, 2.10.4, 2.11, 3.1.2, 3.1.4: bug (G != H)
3.2.2, 3.3, 3.4xxx: no bug (G == H)
