just to make sure, I tested this on a variety of platforms 
(MacOSX 10.6.8 (on Core 2 Duo), 32-bit Linux, 64-bit Linux)
and this works.

So the bug seems to be in the Sage interface to Maxima 
(to the Maxima library, AFAIK)
