SOLVED... I have 64 bit hardware but I installed 32 bit Ubuntu. (Sorry, I'm a newbie to 64 bit stuff and didn't even know there was a separate Ubuntu flavor.)
When I installed the 32bit Sage binary it worked. One suggestion is to perhaps add a check to see if user trying to run the 64 bit binary on a 32 bit Ubuntu install to give a less cryptic error message. Hope that helps.
