I get a similar error, this time the instruction is

Error: no such instruction: `shrx %eax,108(%rsp),%r9d'

and I am compiling on

gcc version 4.4.7 20120313 (Red Hat 4.4.7-16) (GCC)

with SAGE_INSTALL_GCC=yes.

It seems to me this is due to sage using its own version of "gcc" but the
system's version of "as" which does not understand some of the assembly
instructions of a newer compiler.

I keep running into this problem on old Linux'es and Mac's. Should sage
also offer to provide its own "as"?

Adding '-fPIC' to CFLAGS since we don't (also) build a shared library.
Using additional host-specific CFLAGS: -march=native

Settings from SAGE_LOCAL/include/gmp.h:
  CC=gcc -std=gnu99
  CFLAGS=-m64 -O2 -march=corei7-avx -mtune=corei7-avx  -g
Settings found in /usr/include/gmp.h (currently not used):
  CC=
  CFLAGS=
Finally using:
  CC=gcc
  CFLAGS=-march=native -g -O3  -fPIC
  CPP=cpp
  CPPFLAGS=
  LDFLAGS=
  ABI=
  M4=
(These settings may still get overridden by 'configure' or Makefiles.)

Now configuring GMP-ECM with the following options:
  --prefix="/projects/snapreg/sage-6.9/local"
  --libdir="/projects/snapreg/sage-6.9/local/lib"
  --with-gmp="/projects/snapreg/sage-6.9/local"
You can set ECM_CONFIGURE to pass additional parameters,
e.g. "--enable-shared" to also build a *shared* library,
or "--disable-sse2" if you encounter problems on a Pentium III system.

Error installing package ecm-6.4.4
************************************************************************
Please email sage-devel (http://groups.google.com/group/sage-devel)
explaining the problem and including the relevant part of the log file
  /projects/snapreg/sage-6.9/logs/pkgs/ecm-6.4.4.log
Describe your computer, operating system, etc.
If you want to try to fix the problem yourself, *don't* just cd to
/projects/snapreg/sage-6.9/local/var/tmp/sage/build/ecm-6.4.4 and type 'make'
or whatever is appropriate.
Instead, the following commands setup all environment variables
correctly and load a subshell for you to debug the error:
  (cd '/projects/snapreg/sage-6.9/local/var/tmp/sage/build/ecm-6.4.4' &&
'/projects/snapreg/sage-6.9/sage' --sh)
When you are done debugging, you can type "exit" to leave the subshell.
