He may not have conceived it initially, but after conception, it was Rico who tirelessly took it into his foster care, nurtured, networked, nudged and willed it onwards, openly and behind the scenes. Even if he does not get that award, there are those who know the role he has played to put Saligao and Goa on the www map of cyberspace. At least someone has recognised his unique publishing startup and his selfless effort to give the anonymous Goan, the unpublished Goan, the nameless, faceless Goan writer a chance to be in print. In the history of Goa - if there are those who would chronicle it accurately! - 'Goa 1556' must go down as one of those grassroots, not-for-profit, brilliant publishing initiatives that gave Goa's hidden history, writing and genius an escape from obscurity. It is not only launching Goa into cyberspace and alternate, 'gaddo-n-vaddo' publishing. Rico has mentored many 'vaddo-n-ganv' writers, journalists and just plain readers of the written word. Not to mention actively encouraging and supporting young people right up to 'gurudom' in alternate and free software domains like Linux. All this, quietly, very often behind the scenes, without thinking of the 'moolah'. Just selfless giving. Constantly paying back to Saligao and Goa. The fact that local recognition has been so long in coming, is an indication of how low profile he consciously tries to be.
