Yes, FN. Its always a good idea to encourage discussion. I did try 😊
Dont mix "loneliness and alienation" with "Vocation". No one disagrees on the need for companionship and support for the wonderfully brave widows and widowers of Saligao. That's hardly for discussion. It's the word "vocation" that featured in the Report that needs clarification. You may know that up to the mid 20th century, catholic widows were often urged to retreat into complete social isolation, attend daily mass and absorb themselves (and their estates) completely into the church. Virginity and widowhood were considered convocationable. It took Pope Pius XII to proclaim that the widowed could remarry if they chose to. [https://www.catholicculture.org/culture/library/view.cfm?recnum=3042] That would be as recent as 1950. Despite asking, we dont know what attitude the church in Saligao has adopted. However, I am sure we all agree that our approach should be much more modern - encouraging integration and development while eschewing blame and exploitation (financial/physical/emotional and spiritual). Hence the 10 commandments of which I am justly proud. By all means choose a vocation, but vocations don't belong to the church alone, as we all know. (Orlinda Sequeira, Renewal) Dilip, What context does this come from? To my mind, many people (not just widows) in Goa are still grappling to battle loneliness and alienation, to find the support they need to carry on with life, and sometimes to make ends meet economically too. This is particularly true with people who have to earn local livelihoods, and do not have the benefits of expat incomes or pensions. I know of your experience as a consultant in emergency medicine and with the NHS Trust, but with due respect the priorities here could be different. Maybe the others with the experience could weigh in, into this discussion.
