Fontainhas vandalism creats furore in House.

The vandalism on June 18 at Fontainhas-Mala( Panjim) created a furor in the Goa Legislative Assembly with NCP, Goa unit chief and Saligao MLA Dr. Wilfred de Souza demanding action against the culprit.

Dr. de Souza who raised a query in the house on Monday refused to accept replies from Chief Minister Manohar  Parrikar that a case has been registered against 25-30 unknown persons.

Dr. de Souza pointed out to the news reports indicating the alleged involvement of freedom fighter Naguesh Karmali and demanded to know why no action had been initiated against the alleged person.

Dr. de Souza also flayed the Chief Minister for not acting on a complaint filed in this matter by ward corporator  Rudresh Chodankar, corporator Patricia Pinto, MLA Victoria Fernandes and Advocate Aires Rodrigues along with 83 signatories.

When the chief minister said that the complaint should have come from the owner of the said property where the damage was caused, he was lambasted by Dr. de Souza who felt that the chief minister was unaware of the law..

The former chief minister pointed out that nothing stopped the police from acting on the complaint even if it did not come from the owner of the property.

Mr. Parrikar replying to allegations said “ We are awaiting a report from the corporation of the City of Panaji and will take action thereafter.”

He also disclosed that police registered a complaint on July 12. Mr. Parrikar said that in a complaint lodged by Sukhija of Pnjim Inn no names have been mentioned, while in another complaint the persons who stands as a witness in the case is out of station.

An infuriated Dr. de Souza shot back saying “ You allowed the plaques to be put up at Fontainhas festival” and added further, “ Will the chief minister tell us whether he did this to send a mob of RSS to break it?”

Earlier, Mr. Parrikar said “ I am pained to see how some people tried to change history and names of roads,” but expressed inability to take action unless the owners concerned, whose properties were also involved and damaged came forward with a complaint.

In a written reply, Mr Parrikar disclosed that while investigations were on, the police would take necessary steps to prevent the repetition of such incidents.

Today’s discussion on June 18 incident was brought to an end by Speaker Vishwas Satarkar who disallowed any further queries from Dr. de Souza who continued to lash out at the government even after question hour concluded.( Courtesy—Herald).
