ST ANNE’S CHAPEL---VII.

Today 24th August is the feast of St. Bartholomew and the ‘Double Zonnkar’( Dodde-Zonkar) Fernandes’ from Saligao and of 10th Vangodd of the Communidade de Saligao are celebrating the feast of their patron St.Bartolomew is Sant Anne’s chapel. I think if I am not mistaken it is Mr. Joe Fernandes’( Fogo) one of his son is celebrating it this year as done before by other members of his family..

To continue the description of the jobs done by former Committeee members of the Chapel the following happened in 1885.

For the first time on 23rd August 1885 a cupboard in the form of a ‘comoda’ for vestments appeared in the sacristy. It was offered by Fr. Joaquim Jose Cordeiro( Mollbhatt). The ‘bairristas’ thanked him for the valuable article for posterity and Mr. Pedro Damiao Carneiro( Donvaddo), the treasurer accepted it on behalf of the Committee. He further wrote these minutes:

On 20th September 1888, Mr. Jose Maria Fernandes, Muddavaddi, presented the accounts of the Chapel of the past three years namely 1883, 1884 & 1885 till September of that year which was found to be correct. He then asked the ‘ bairristas’ to relieve him of the said post and Mr. Santana dos Remedios( Tabravaddo) was nominated as a new ‘ Procurador( Attorney).

The highlights of the Committee from June 1901 to 1908 under the President/Chaplain Fr. Jose Francisco Moniz were:-

  1. They updated all the accounts and corrected discrepancies that were in former accounts.
  2. Made a list of objects donated to the chapel and jotted it in a special Book.
  3. Wrote letters to donors thanking them for their donations.
  4. Fr. Jose Francisco Moniz( Donvaddo) left on 1st July and Fr. Jose Francisco dos Remedios( Tabravaddo) took over as Chaplain.

  5. Took resolution to rebuild the Chapel on 4th March, 1902 with reconstruction of walls, place wooden beams, put false ceiling and re-tiling. The contract was give to Joao Micael Mascarenhas( Tabravaddo Molebhatt) for Rs.599/-..

On 23rd July, 1908, the Rev. Chaplain, Fr. Jose Francisco dos Remedios called up a meeting of all the four wards members and apprised them of the necessity of further improving and enlarging the chapel, constructing a new room for the chapel, re-tiling the floor, substituting the altar and throne, replacing the doors and the money they had was not even sufficient to pay the monthly salary of the chaplain. Therefore they resolved to offer their ‘jono’ of one year to the chapel besides voluntary subscription, and these voluntary subscribers would be considered as benefactors of the chapel and their names would be written on a special book. Then they formed a big Committee of the warders to carry on the project and Fr. Jose Francisco dos Remedios to head this Committee.

On 2nd August 1908, the warders met and chose a new committee of the Chapel to run the affairs of the chapel consisting of:

President: Rev. Fr. Jose Francisco dos Remedios.

Members Mr. Joao Francisco Marcelo Fernandes( Procurador)

Mr. Pedro Xavier Fernandes and Mr. Francisco Manuel dos Remedios

They continued up till 1914.

We shall see some of the highlights of this Committee in the next posting………to be continued.

Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas.
