Perhaps the collective experience of this group can help me find an answer to the following question:
How do I know a PC is off intentionally - i.e. was shutdown by a user as opposed to being off the network, blue screened, whatever - not pingable. I ping them but that only says they are up or not; I am looking for a way to know the difference between being shutdown (then I don't care) and being un-pingable because my wireless connections have gone south ( now I'm interested ). I have looked at several shareware/freeware gizmos but none really seem to fit the bill. What I was trying to do was to create a file on network when up and delete it on shutdown. If file is not there AND I can't ping then shutdown was intentional and I don't consider it down. If file is there and I can't ping it, it would be in some unknown state & I would consider it down. Programs are available that run a program on shutdown, but they all seem to either need the user to pick a separate icon to shutdown or present things other than the standard shutdown dialog. In addition I would just as soon not have to spend $40 for each PC I want to watch. I know where the windows startup folder & run registry settings are, is there anything like that for shutdown?
