I was after basic drill down reporting by Group so that I get the status
of those down but am able to expand to see all checks.

Later on I am looking to do a lot more (Once my php / sql skills improve
probably!).

What kind of things are you looking for?  I use PHP quite a bit and have
been working on converting Brent's templates but real work keeps
interfering.
