Page 22 (or 28 depending on how you look at page numbers) says to hit apply
before testing....so it's even documented....

Most of Woodstone's staff is currently on holiday, however support checks
mail a couple of times a day (over a slow link).   This does mean that we
are not able to do all "normal" support tasks.
We will be back, in full force, on August 10th 2003.

It's more of a quirk than a problem -- that's why I ventured that at
worst it might be a "buglet", not a "bug".
