Hmmmm, you know, I was doing some Telnet checks to SA on an old NT4 box at the house. 
It seemed to do the same thing after several cycles. Never looked into it further 
because it's such a crappy server, so I wasn't completely surprised. But, maybe it's 
not the hardware...

I had a script that would log into Servers Alive at 1am and 6am via
telnet 4301 and issue the start checking command. 

That way if someone disabled the checking because we had the network/san
down but forgot to bring it back up, we'd still find out before 8am next
morning.

For some reason, servers alive seems to go to 99% utilization(at least
intermittently) when I do that.  I'm running the scripts using microsoft
2000 server edition scheduler and reflection.

I'm also running the latest version of SA Web.

I have turned off the scripts and the problem disappeared.
