And see, those are exactly the reasons why I dislike MRTG and LOVE SA. I
grab my data, stick it in a SQL Server db table, where I can then generate
reports (some of which are automatically generated and emailed every
day/week/month) or have .asp pages look at SQL Statements or Views and
generate Java graphs on the fly.

I'm sorry, but storing seriously large amounts of production critical data
(we have SLAs with clients) in a text file is simply ridiculous.

RRD was written by the same guy that developed MRTG. RRD is a good way for
storing and displaying that sort of data (where you want 5 minute, 1 hour, 1
day, 1 week, 1 month, 1 year, etc) graphs.

MRTG is fabulous for *collecting* the data then putting it in RRD for better
management (MRTG natively only uses text log files) and it's better/faster
at generating graphs in real time.

Directly from the RRDTool website:

RRDtool is not a replacement for MRTG, as it does not implement the frontend
and data aquisition features of MRTG (MRTG can be configured to use RRDtool
as its database backend and together with a cgi grapher like 14all or
mrtg-rrd all your mrtg graphs can be generated on demand). If you can
program yourself you can use RRDtool right out of the box or if you don't
program you can use one of several frontends which use RRDtool.

Hope that clears things up for you.
