That's a pretty good idea Greg - although for some reason it seems not to want to run on the particular server I'm checking. I'll fiddle with it some more tomorrow...

Cheers,

Ian

RE: [SA-list] External COM check (eventlog) checks whole log every cycle

Instead of going back to the Perl script, I installed the basic version of SA on most of my "client" machines and am running the Eventlog checks locally... they run far faster and I haven't had any of the local checks lockup SA yet...  This is also a "solution" to the fact that one cycle of checks was taking almost 15 minutes to complete, even though its only doing about 25% of the checks on either the 3rd or 5th cycles...  Just way too long !!!  Since I could do 10 checks on each server, I also added local diskspace checks and a check to make sure that my remote control solution was also running (with a service restart if it didn't find it).

Now my main SA server runs the whole cycle in less than 7 minutes (on average) and hits just about every check on every cycle!

OK, fair call Dirk. I'll have a look at the old perl method for now.

Has anyone else spent any time on this, trying to see what WMI is doing wrong?

It's an issue because we selected WMI to do this.  Remember that is within a free add-on, not within Servers Alive as such.

We can do several things about this:

* leave it as it is knowing the issues of WMI

* remove the check from the site due to the problems with WMI

* re-write it using a different technology.

Currently we'll leave it as it is.  And once v5 is released we will be looking at doing a re-write using a different technology.

Dirk.

Ummm.... but (with the utmost respect) if SA is using WMI and WMI isn't working properly, doesn't that become an issue for SA?

The eventlog check is done using WMI.  Within the WMI query we say "give the entries of the eventlog AFTER eventlog_entry_number", but it sure looks like WMI is not doing this correctly....I'm afraid this is an WMI issue not an SA issue...

[SA-list] External COM check (eventlog) checks whole log every cycle

Hi,

I think this has been brought up before by someone, but I don't think there was an answer. The eventlog check (external com check) appears to check the entire event log on every cycle. As this takes about 10 minutes, and I need to do it on about 25 servers, I've got a problem!

Am I doing something wrong?

Cheers,

Ian
