Thanks to the list, this problem is now solved.

Smoothwall has a SETUP that can be re-run in order to make those
changes...it was that simple...you just need to know it :-)

Subject: [SA-list] Off-topic: Linux question

We had a firewall crash yesterday night (hardware firewall and apparently
the motherboard of it crashed :-( - but if all goes well we should get a new
motherboard for it in the next few days - still it's good to have a
"hot-spare" replacement even if it's just a PC :-)) We were able to quickly
replace it by a PC with 3 nics, but apparently we made a little mistake
within the setup of the firewall software. We're able to make changes to
the config (network config) via the commandline, however when rebooting the
pc (with fw software) it still seems to load the old config.
We can then again make the same change via the commandline.

I suppose it's possible to make the change in some kind of config file? If
so could anybody enlight me on what file(s) and how to change them?

Commands we had to do to make the needed changes
        ifconfig eth2 down
        ifconfig eth2 new.ip.address.something netmask 255.255.255.252
        ifconfig eth2 up
        route add default gw other.ip.adddress.something

(this temp firewall is running SmoothWall Express 2.0- I have console access
to the system so I can make all needed changes).

If you can help, then please reply off-list (dirk at woodstone dot nu)
