In particular, I need to know if either of these will work (or at least, if
anyone sees any problems with them):

No response to this - does that mean nobody is using a GSM modem at all?

All,

Our main alerts are SMS texts, which are sent via SMPP to a 3rd party SMS host
on the Internet. This means that if our Internet line is down, we don't get
these alerts.

We also use emails, but as these go out via the Internet line to the Blackberry
network, these are also out of action in the event of Internet connection
failure.

One solution to this might be to have a secondary route to the Internet (across
our WAN and out through a different site. The option to do this within SA would
be useful to have, but even this isn't foolproof, as if there were a
catastrophic failure of comms in the data centre, this might not work either.

What I had therefore set up was a secondary SA box, which checks both the
primary SA box and Internet connectivity. If the latter fails, it sends out (in
theory) an SMS alert via a GSM phone connected to it via cable.

However, this GSM connection seems to be rather flaky, as was proved on Friday
night when our Internet connection failed but we received no alerts. The
problem seems to be that SA sees the GSM modem as being in use by something
else (dodgy cable? dodgy Windows modem technology? who knows).

Does anybody have a GSM modem set up that they believe is reliable and robust?
If so, can you share what you are using (i.e. what GSM modem, what method of
connection to the SA box, etc). I'm particularly interested in UK based
solutions, although others may find this discussion useful in other places.
Alternatively, can anyone suggest an alternative method of alerting to get
around this issue?

Many thanks,

Ian
