It does gives an errorlevel, see screenshot.


 

The question was : can I use a piping character in and External check ?

Thanks for the suggestion though.  I'm aware of the work around with a script.

The command you described would not output an error level.   You can create a 
batch file or a vbs using that command and an if loop to set the error level.
