I guess it would make more sense to have this work properly.
Doing a full get{pw,gr}ent is many times more expensive than doing a
single lookup as all the other functions do.

Environment variables are more flexible - you can do things like:
$ WINBINDD_DOMAIN=FOODOM getent passwd
or my favourite:
$ _NO_WINBINDD=1 killall -9 winbindd
