I have had this problem before. Never really got to the bottom of it but if you want to get on then just add '-a' to your swat command to disable authentication.

I have /etc/xinetd.d/swat defined properly (I think) and port 901 is active and starts SWAT OK. When I try to log in to SWAT either locally or from remote browser, the authentication fails. I'm logging in as user=root with the correct password, but the authentication still fails. Is there some special password file that SWAT uses?
