For a squid-winbind setup, you only need to run winbindd.  

As detailed in the Squid FAQ, you only need to run smbd for it's
periodic change of the machine trust account password.  This can be done
from cron instead, using 'smbpasswd -t' available since Samba 2.2.6.

You should be able to get away without nmbd - it's only role in client
name resolution should be for brain-dead Win9X servers (sends reply
packets to 139).
