The first problem I think you are running into is you are using a smbpasswd backend. Unfortunatly this doesn't have the support for the attributes you need to run a domain. To fix this you need to be running a TDBSAM backend. You would probably find the samba 3 by example handy, ( http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/) and the offical howto ( http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/).
