This is what it should look like: $ ls -l /usr/bin/net lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 2009-12-05 17:51 /usr/bin/net -> /etc/alternatives/net $ ls -l /etc/alternatives/net lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 2009-12-05 17:44 /etc/alternatives/net -> /usr/bin/net.samba3 $ ls -l /usr/bin/net.samba3 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 5258980 2009-10-01 16:45 /usr/bin/net.samba3 So I think that on your machine, the /etc/alternatives links are not set up for the "net" command.
