Is the max data count too small the problem?  Is there a bug in this
version of samba?  Is this relevant?

Or is there something else wrong I don't see?

linux 2.6.27.29 on suse 11.1 samba 3.4.3-12.1

Looks like samba bug 6850, fixed in 3.4.4.
