Sure. Latest AD still supports the RPC-based "security=domain" mode that does not require Kerberos at all. However, this assumes SMB signing which is only properly supported from Samba 3.0 on, so an upgrade is necessary here. Your W2k8 can be configured not to require signing, but Samba 2 is so old that I would highly recommend upgrading anyway.
