John, thanks for the response. Yes, machine names are standard text, no special characters with the exception of the Samba box, which has an underscore in the name.
If the workstation is Win2K, everything works great, including browsing. XP, however, has the browsing problem ("The specified network is no longer available"). And this is with a fresh install of XP.
